Be a Smuggler!

Workshop length: 1 hour

Suitable for: KS1-3

Become a smuggler in 18th century Folkestone! Explore the differences between pirates and smugglers, Learn why smuggling was rife in Folkestone and what methods the smugglers used to land contraband! Find out about infamous local smuggling gangs, the methods they used to avoid detection and the government response to the smuggling trade. Use all your STEM skills and teamwork to make a raft, make sure it’s seaworthy and that you can hide your contraband effectively!   

During the workshop, you can:

• Find out what goods were smuggled.

• Find out how smugglers hid their contraband.

• Examine original documents and images.

• Work as a team to make a seaworthy vessel and watch it float!
