Folkestone: The Fashionable Seaside Resort!
Workshop length: 1 to 2 hours
Suitable for: KS1-3
From a sleepy fishing town, to a seaside resort at the height of fashion, what happened in Victorian times to shape the Folkestone we know today? This fun interactive session will give students the chance to find lost luggage belonging to 6 residents of Victorian Folkestone. They can hunt through the bags for clues as to the owner’s identity, try on their clothing and learn all about their lives. The workshop can be extended with either a design task or junk model challenge.
During the workshop, you can:
• Examine original artefacts, documents and images
• Try on Victorian costumes.
• Play with Victorian toys.
• Learn about Victorian dress & swimwear
• See original footage of Folkestone in the Edwardian period

Victorian Toys and Childhood
Workshop length: 1-1.5 hours
Suitable for: EYFS-KS1
This workshop offers the opportunity to think and talk about the lives of children who lived in Folkestone in the past. Children will move around the room, trying out different toys and games from Victorian Folkestone. The session can include dressing up and simple role play, looking at some of the jobs people had in Victorian Folkestone.
During the workshop you will:
- Consider similarities and differences between childhood now and in the past.
- Play with replica Victorian Toys.
- Dress up in period clothing.
- Make a Victorian style toy to take home.
